  • After tension erupted on Monday when the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) attempted to obstruct the construction of a barbed wire fence along the India-Bangladesh border in the Sukdevpur area of Malda district, the Border Security Force (BSF) on Tuesday said the work on the fence is proceeding as planned.

The Central government’s Road Works Department, in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF), was undertaking the fence project when the BGB intervened.

Following the incident, on Tuesday, DIG (South Bengal Frontier) and Spokesperson N K Pandey stated that the construction was on and that the situation has since returned to normal.

“Our counterpart had raised some objection, we replied to them and responded to their objection. Things are fine and work is going on as normal,” Pandey told The Indian Express.

Officials said there was a brief misunderstanding on the part of the BGB regarding the work along the border in Malda’s Kaliachak No 3 block. Initially, the BGB raised concerns about the location of the fence and stopped the installation on Monday.

According to local sources, residents from near the Bangladesh border gathered in the area during the exchange. However, BSF and BGB officials met again on Tuesday morning, and the issue was sorted out. Authorities said that the situation at the border is currently normal. In Bangladesh, this area is under the Shibganj police station in Rajshahi district.
