Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted permission to the Bengal BJP to hold a rally from Rabindra Sadan metro station to National Library from noon to 3 pm on Thursday.
Justice Jay Sengupta gave the permission but capped the number of participants at 1,000 and granted nod for the rally route of Rabindra Sadan to National Library via PTS crossing and Alipore zoo. The BJP's rally is to stage a protest against "illegal commercial use" of zoo land.
The party had wanted the rally from 1 pm to 5 pm with 1,500 members. The state contended it, saying it was a working day. Justice Sengupta said, "Citizens have a right to protest, subject to reasonable restrictions." He reduced the number of participants to 1,000 & changed the timings.
