  • Bolpur: A married woman has returned to her hometown with the help of a Mumbai-based NGO and Birbhum District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in Bolpur after allegedly escaping abuse. The woman has filed a complaint with Bolpur police against her mother and husband.

According to the complaint, the woman was forcibly married to a man in Jharkhand when she was 15 years old. From the outset, she endured abuse at her in-laws' home.

Last year, she managed to flee her husband's house with her two children and reached Bolpur. She alleged that her husband, in collusion with her mother, drugged her and took her back to Mumbai. Her husband allegedly subjected her to torture. She approached Mumbai police and sought refuge in a local NGO. Through the NGO, she contacted Mahiuddin Ahmed, a para-legal volunteer associated with the DLSA in Birbhum.

The Mumbai-based NGO and Bolpur police were informed and with their support the woman returned to Burdwan to her father's home. However, her mother forcibly brought her to Bolpur again.

The woman subsequently reached out to the DLSA for rescue. Bolpur police intervened and placed her in safe custody. A DLSA official stated that the woman would be provided with necessary security and legal assistance.
