Bhattacharya recently filed medical bills in the TA-DA section of the Assembly, and after examining the bills the matter was reported to the Assembly secretariat and the Speaker.
Manik Bhattacharya was arrested in 2022 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the multi-crore teacher recruitment scam in West Bengal. He was arrested over alleged irregularities in teacher recruitment in the state.
In September 2024, the Calcutta High Court granted bail to Bhattacharya.
According to rules, the jail authorities are responsible for the medical treatment of a prisoner.
According to sources after examining the bill, the Speaker summoned legal experts to take advice on this matter.
Sources said Speaker Biman Banerjee summoned legal experts for advice on the matter, and that the Superintendent of the Presidency Jail had been called for a meeting on Monday.
“This is an internal matter. We examine all bills that come,” Banerjee told media persons.
Meanwhile, Bhattacharya refused to comment on this issue.
Recently, Trinamool Congres MLA and actor Kanchan Mullick had
triggered a controversy over the “submission” of a hospital bill of Rs 6 lakh for reimbursement to the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday, following the birth of his child at a private hospital in Kolkata.
