123 Kolkata: Major parts of south Kolkata will go dry on January 18 as the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) water supply department will shut down the Garden Reach water treatment plant for necessary maintenance and repair work. Normal supply from the plant will resume the next morning, said Mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday. According to him, the repair work is being taken up during winter as the demand for water now is relatively low.
"Major repair, upgrade, and maintenance works at Garden Reach Water Works and at major booster pumping stations have compelled us to shut down the water treatment plant. Hence, no water will be supplied from the plant to vast areas of south Kolkata, including the Jadavpur-Tollygunge belt, on Jan 18 after 6 am. The supply will resume after 24 hours," said a KMC official.
A civic official said no water will be supplied from Garden Reach to several booster pumping stations, including Parnasree, Chetla, Behala Daspara, Kalighat, Bansdroni, Santoshpur (Jadavpur), and Kasba on Jan 18. "As these booster pumping stations will receive no water from Garden Reach, residents of these localities will receive no water the whole day after the initial supply at 6 am," said the official. tnn
