• BSF faces opposition by BGB during fencing at Bangladesh border, holds  flag meeting
    Indian Express | 11 January 2025
  • Amid the recent objections by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) over the Border Security Force’s (BSF) attempts to erect fences in certain areas along the India-Bangladesh border, the two forces held a meeting at the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Petrapole in North 24 Parganas district on Thursday.

The meeting comes in the wake of recent instances of BGB raising objections to BSF’s efforts to build border fences in certain areas along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Aimed at fostering mutual cooperation and enhancing coordination along the border, the pre-scheduled meeting was attended by BSF South Bengal Frontier inspector-general Maninder PS Pawar and BGB brigadier-general Mohammad Humayun Kabir. The discussions between the two forces focused on effective border management, measures to prevent illegal crossings, combating cross-border crimes, and fostering a secure and peaceful environment in the region, a statement by the BSF South Bengal Frontier said.

The IG, South Bengal Frontier, emphasized the importance of mutual cooperation between the two forces in promoting a more secure border environment, ensuring stability, and fostering prosperity in the region. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and continuing efforts to enhance the spirit of cooperation between India and Bangladesh.

The current dispute stems from the BSF’s recent attempt to erect a barbed wire fence in the Sukdevpur area of Baishnabnagar of the Malda district.

On Monday for the first time, the fencing work was briefly paused, after the BGB claimed it was being conducted on Bangladeshi territory. However, the issue was resolved through discussions, and construction resumed without further disruptions on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the BSF had resumed the fencing work, but it was soon halted by the BGB. The situation escalated further with the involvement of local residents. Villagers from both sides of the border engaged also in heated exchanges and slogans echoed on the Indian side.

Local villagers allege that the BGB has been obstructing the BSF from erecting the fence. “The BGB continues to obstruct the fencing work. This is a serious concern as it leaves the border vulnerable to infiltration by militants and smugglers,” said a villager Swapan Mondal.

Another resident, Janardan Mandal, while speaking with the mediapersons, highlighted the potential threat posed by Rohingya refugees residing on the Bangladeshi side and emphasized the need for a strong border fence to prevent illegal entry and maintain security.

Leader of Opposition in Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari praised the villagers for their willingness to defend the nation.  Strongly condemning the BGB’s actions, Adhikari accused the Bangladesh government of harbouring militants and instigating the conflict. “This (incident) is happening at the instigation the government in that country. However, the people there have taken the responsibility on themselves to nab smugglers, human traffickers, and radicals…” he said.
