• Traffic OCs told to visit accident spots, prepare report

  • Kolkata: There were 13 fatal accidents since Dec, and a worried Lalbazar top brass reiterated that all traffic guard OCs must visit each traffic accident spot and prepare a detailed report to Lalbazar outlining how another similar accident can be prevented at that spot.

"In an effort to curb such accidents– especially when there is not any particular reason behind these accidents exceptthat most victims were two-wheeler riders, Lalbazar decided to hit the ground and analyse each accident on the spot. While this was a standing instruction since last year, we want to ensure that from now on even non-fatal accidents get covered," said a senior officer.

A group of cops – with help from experts in IIT Kharagpur and Jadavpur University – earlier moved from one accident-prone spot to anotherto study all possible ways that can turn the particular spot safer for both motorists and pedestrians. This Traffic Safety Committee – consisting of OCs and from Lalbazar-based road marking section, Fatal Squad, and traffic department planning wings – also made recommendations that got implemented.

This time, the OC was asked to report to make him more accountable for each accident. The OC can hold special nakas, organise training sessions, or seek help from road marking and planning wings to change the situation on the ground, said another IPS officer. The OC is also expected to bring all possible engineering and enforcement aspects to the table while carrying out spot visits.
