• CP orders security reassessment for mins, MLAs

  • Kolkata: Police commissioner Manoj Verma has issued a directive to reassess the security arrangements of public representatives—ministers, MLAs, MPs and councillors. The directive followed recent attacks on Trinamool councillors—a murder in Malda and a murder attempt in Kasba.

After the review, respective DC and special branch will report to the commissioner, following which a final decision on assigning security will be taken. The security clause was part of the 17-page directive that OCs and DCs received on Friday.

The CP instructed OCs and the STF to stay vigilant to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms in Kolkata. Additionally, the CP urged OCs to prevent illegal occupation of govt land, working in coordination with the KMC and the administration. In the last administrative meeting, chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her dissatisfaction with police's role in the illegal occupation of govt land.

The CP directed OCs to act against the "booming industry" of illegal call centres and stop unauthorised constructions and landfills. —Dwaipayan Ghosh
