• Cattle thief lynched in East Burdwan

  • 123 Memari: A suspected cattle thief was lynched in Merua village in East Burdwan district's Memari on Saturday night.

    Locals had organised night patrols due to increasing incidents of cattle theft. Late on Saturday, four persons were spotted attempting to steal cattle from the cowshed of a villager, Sailen Majhi. While three managed to flee in a vehicle, one was caught and beaten to death.

    Upon receiving the information, a team from Memari police station arrived at the scene and transported the deceased to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.

    Speaking to TOI, East Burdwan SP Sukesh Kumar confirmed that a case had been registered. Three persons have been detained and police are continuing raids in the area. The victim remains unidentified.

    Memari MLA Madhusudan Bhattacharya told TOI said the villagers should have handed the suspect over to the police.

    In Dec 2023, two persons suspected of cattle theft were lynched.
