12 Kolkata: With the arrival of Gangasagar pilgrims from different parts of the country, Kolkata — a crucial transit point and logistical hub — gets a substantial economic boost around Makar Shankrati (Jan 14) every year.
Pilgrims stop in Kolkata to rest, refuel, and stock up on essentials before making their way to Sagar Island. Hotels, lodges, and guest houses in the city as well as in South 24-Parganas are experiencing near-full occupancy.
Roadside eateries and restaurants, too, are working overtime to cater to the flurry of visitors, generating significant business.
Local vendors selling warm clothes, ingredients for puja, and flowers are doing brisk business. "The Gangasagar Mela highlights Kolkata's role as a gateway and economic engine. From small traders to transport operators, the local economy thrives during this period," said an official, in charge of the transit hubs in Babughat. This year, nearly 2,500 buses from various states have arrived in the city ferrying the pilgrims. Lakhs of tourists have also arrived in trains.
Ratan Das, a local trader who has set up a stall selling woollen garments at Bangabasi Ground opposite Eden Gardens, said: "This is our biggest season. Pilgrims buy woollens, torches, and even grocery items before continuing their journey."
According to an official, the makeshift food stalls set up in transit camps in Babughat alone are expected to generate revenues exceeding Rs 10 crore, this season. Small vendors selling blankets, clothing, and travel accessories have reported brisk business, with some vendors doubling their usual earnings. Petrol pumps, ferry services, and app-based cab aggregators are also seeing a surge in demand. "Refuelling the buses alone provides a huge boost to the local economy," said Suresh Singh, a private bus operator in Babughat. He added that earnings during the Gangasagar Mela period often triple compared to regular days. The state govt made extensive arrangements to ensure the smooth flow of pilgrims. This year, the state govt has deployed 2,250 govt buses, 250 private buses, nine barges, 32 vessels, 100 launches, and 19 jetties. More than 2,500 civic volunteers and other personnel were recruited to manage the massive gathering. One airborne, four water, and 100 land ambulances have been stationed at the site of pilgrimage. Three helipads have also been made operational. CM Mamata Banerjee has also been vocal in her appeal to the central govt to declare the Gangasagar Mela as a national fair.
