"I went to the house with the cops. Inside, all the doors were pried open and furniture was ransacked. Steel almirahs with lockers were broken and jewellery was gone. We are still counting the losses, but the overall value of stolen goods will be in excess of Rs 15 lakh," said Hazra. He has been living in Middleton Row along with his wife for the past three to four months to look after a friend's son who is critically ill.
According to Hazra, a day after the theft was reported, construction workers engaged in a development behind the house spotted two youths attempting to enter his house. They caught them, gave them a thrashing, and let them off without handing them over to police.
Police have registered an FIR and a forensic expert team visited the house. CCTV footage was gathered from the neighbourhood. "We believe that a gang from South 24 Parganas who travel by train to Majerhat may be responsible," said an officer.
