New Town police station IC ‘closed’, govt tells HC
Times of India | 15 January 2025
Kolkata: The New Town police station inspector-in-charge was "closed" till further orders by the Bidhannagar police commissionerate, the state told Calcutta High Court on Tuesday.
This development followed Justice Tirthankar Ghosh's directive to the state on Dec 12, 2024, to take action against the IC by Jan 10, 2025. Else, Justice Ghosh had said, he would himself take action against the IC for failing to act against land mafias. The state has also appealed for the cancellation of the bail plea of the accused, pending before CJM Barasat.

"New Town is a region where investors are coming… A trained officer must be appointed there," Justice Ghosh reiterated.
The additional govt pleader, Swapan Banerjee, submitted that the state counsel's earlier submission on the IC's conduct was a miscommunication. Earlier, it was submitted that the New Town IC defied the instructions of the advocate appearing for the state. "All police stations should be serious. You are building up a commissionerate... You are bringing officers from Bengal Police. They are working in the commissionerate. They must understand they can't take it casually," Justice Ghosh said.
In the earlier hearing, Justice Ghosh had asked the govt counsel to check the officer's records from past five postings. He had pointed out the IC was an officer at the Baguiati PS, when the bodies of two children were found. Also, during his tenure, seized vehicles were stolen from the police station. He also referred to three cars being stolen. In the last hearing, the Bidhannagar police commissioner was told that as the commissionerate head, he couldn't shirk responsibility for such a major incident, and that he should give a report to court by Dec 12.
