  • A Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker was killed while a party zonal president (anchal sabhapati) and another activist were injured after two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire at them in Kaliachak town of West Bengal’s Malda district on Tuesday, police said.

The deceased, identified as Hasu Sheikh, was also attacked with bricks on the head by the assailants, it is learnt.

The incident, which comes just 12 days after a TMC councillor, Dulal Sarkar, was murdered in the district, took place around 7 am when party’s Noda-Jadupur zonal chief Bakul Sheikh, a local resident, was laying the foundation stone of a roadwork in Kaliachak’s Nayabasti area.

The other party worker injured in the attack was identified as Esaruddin Sheikh.

The police reached the spot after receiving information.

The injured were rushed to the Malda Medical College and Hospital where Hasu Sheikh died soon after. The two injured are undergoing treatment in a critical condition as they had severe bleeding.

A police official said, “One person has died while two received injuries. One of them is critical. A case has been registered and we have initiated an investigation into the matter. Those involved in the attack will not be spared.”

No arrest has been made in the case so far.

Malda Superintendent of Police (SP) Pradip Kumar Yadav could not be reached for comments despite repeated attempts.

In his statement to the police, Bakul Sheikh named Zakir Sheikh, a local Trinamool leader, claiming he was trying to obstruct the roadwork inauguration event. An argument also took place at the spot just before the two assailants arrived there, it is learnt.

A video of the incident surfaced on social media wherein the attackers are seen opening fire on the TMC men and then attacking one of them with bricks.

The incident has brought forth the purported factional feud within the ruling TMC in the district.

Seven persons have been arrested in connection with the killing of TMC councillor Dulal Sarkar, alias Babla, who was shot dead in front of his factory on January 2. TMC’s Malda town president Narendranath Tiwari is among those arrested in the Dulal murder case.

Dulal Sarkar’s wife Chaitali Sarkar on Tuesday said, “The culprits must be sent behind bars. The police should ensure such incidents don’t occur again. It is an extremely unfortunate incident.”

TMC’s Sujapur MLA Mohd Abdul Ghani said, “Why were the police not alert after Babla’s death? It is definitely a failure on part of the police.”
