12 Malda: One person was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the attack on a Trinamool functionary, his brother and his aide in Kaliachak a day earlier that left one dead. However, the main accused, Jakir Sk, is still at large. Police said the search was on and officers are combing the area with a canine squad.
Around 9am on Tuesday, Trinamool anchal sabhapati (area president) Bakul Sk, his brother and local panchayat samiti member Esaruddin Sk, and their close aide Ataur Sk were shot at in Nawada Jadupur. The attackers then repeatedly hit the trio with bricks, in front of several hundred onlookers. Ataur died while and Bakul and Esaruddin were seriously wounded.
Esaruddin, as well as local MLA Abdul Ghani, blamed Bakul's rival Jakir for this attack. Police detained 10 people on Tuesday. One of them, Amir Hamza of Dariyapur, was arrested. He was produced in court and taken into police custody.
