  • The West Bengal CID has begun its investigation into the death of a new mother at the Medinipur Medical College and Hospital (MMCH). This comes at a time when three new mothers are undergoing treatment in a “very critical condition” after allegedly being administered expired Ringer’s Lactate saline.

On Tuesday, the sleuths recorded statements of the Resident Medical Officer (RMO), two junior medics, and four nurses who were on duty at the gynaecology department on the night of January 9 when the woman died, sources from the CID said.

The team is also slated to record the statements of the principal of the MMCH and the medical superintendent cum vice-principal.

The CID team has also recorded the statement of the MMCH superintendent, Jayanta Routh at the latter’s office and collected several documents from the hospital such as duty rosters and logbooks.

A CID officer also spoke to the family members of the deceased and the three new mothers. A DSP rank officer of the CID is leading the team of officers.

Meanwhile, sources from SSKM Hospital said the kidneys and lungs of the women undergoing treatment are in a “critical condition” and dialysis is being performed.

On Tuesday, the state health department issued a memo to all Chief Medical Officers of health in the districts and principals of all medical colleges to stop procuring and using items “through SMIS from Paschim Banga Pharmaceuticals until further orders”.

The West Bengal government on Monday ordered an inquiry by the CID, after a 13-member expert panel found “negligence” on the part of the hospital staff on duty.

Mamoni Rui Das (21) had delivered a baby on January 10. The next day, her condition started to deteriorate, and she was shifted to the ICU. She succumbed on January 12.
