123 Kolkata: Subhash Roy, the promoter of the building that collapsed at Baghajatin's Vidyasagar Colony, was arrested on Thursday. Roy was nabbed with the help of the Sundarban District Police from a guest house at Fraserganj near Bakkhali. He was brought to Netaji Nagar police station for interrogation.
Roy, who promoted eight buildings in the area, was absconding since the building collapsed on Tuesday.Saif Ali Khan Health Update'Still trying to process': Kareena's first reaction after husband stabbed'Attacker was in son Jeh's room': Saif Ali Khan's staff shares shocking detailsSaif Ali Khan attacked: 20 police teams formed to search for accusedWhen cops called on his mobile, it was found to be switched off. According to sources, Roy turned on his mobile phone once on Wednesday night. This helped the cops to track his phone location.
The probe has revealed that occupants of the building had chosen a construction firm from Haryana online, without conducting any background checks, to ‘lift' the building using hydraulic jacks. Cops found that the workers involved in the ‘lifting' operation were previously employed with the Haryana-based company. But these workers were no longer associated with the organisation at the time of the collapse. "We believe the contract was decided at a much lower price than the market rate," stated a source.
The probe hinted that Roy had instigated the residents to go for hydraulic lifting. Sources claimed that the two unsold apartments were still under the name of Roy, who had been trying to sell those off for a long time. Brokers were bringing in potential buyers, but some local residents would warn them. The promoter was eager to straighten the building. An FIR has already been filed against the promoter, its residents, and the Haryana-based firm.
