12 Kolkata/Malda: A BSF lady constable fired bullets in the air before shooting at cow smugglers trying to get past Indian territory at Malda's Itaghati early on Thursday. The smuggling attempt was foiled and 2 cows were rescued.
BSF said the constable saw the armed cattle smugglers approaching the border with livestock around 2.30 am. She initially shot two rounds in the air to warn them. When the perpetrators remained undeterred, she fired one round from a pump action gun, compelling them to retreat," said a spokesperson from BSF's South Bengal Frontier.
A subsequent area inspection resulted in the discovery of two abandoned cattle that the smugglers had left behind. The rescued cattle will be e-tagged and handed over to the Dhyan Foundation, he said.
In other operations, 620 bottles of banned Phensedyl and 22 bottles of Indian-Made Foreign Liquor were seized while 4 cattle were rescued from smugglers in different border areas of North 24 Parganas.
