  • 12 Kolkata: To commemorate Soumitra Chatterjee's 90th birth anniversary on Jan 19, his ‘Apur Sansar' co-star Sharmila Tagore was scheduled to deliver the Soumitra Chatterjee Memorial Lecture in Kolkata. However, due to an assault on her son Saif Ali Khan in Mumbai, Tagore will be unable to present her discourse. An engagement with her celebrating the platinum jubilee of Ballygunge Cultural Association that was to be held on Jan 18 has also been cancelled.

Tagore was supposed to come to the city on Friday. She was in communication with musicians Soumyajit-Sourendra. "She was supposed to come for the celebration of 75 years of Ballygunge Cultural Association. On Jan 18, we orchestrated a programme commemorating distinguished personalities of our country, including Tagore and Ray. Hers was a presentation of four to five pieces where she would recite excerpts. The rest of the evening is for the performances by the three generations of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan saab," Soumyajit said. "We were in correspondence with her on Wednesday night. We learnt about the incident with Saif from her niece on Thursday morning. We promptly cancelled the event," he added.

Chatterjee's daughter Poulomi Bose saw the shocking event on news. "The communication came from her end. It demonstrated remarkable responsibility on her part to inform us. That's why they are such great people. Her niece telephoned at 9:30 in the morning to convey that she wouldn't be available to present the lecture on Sunday. She graciously suggested we could arrange an alternative speaker. However, we declined that proposition. Within a quarter of an hour, her niece rang again to confirm that she would arrive subsequently to deliver the lecture."

Other commemorative events, including the staging of a theatrical piece penned by Chatterjee and an exhibition of his paintings, correspondence, and memorabilia, will be held as scheduled. "This exhibition is noteworthy as I am showcasing his Padma Bhushan and the Légion d'Honneur medals. We have numerous new paintings on display. A dedicated section features photographs of his captured by Pratap Dasgupta," Bose said. On Sunday, she will be directing ‘Chandanpurer Chor' – a play authored by Chatterjee. "In the evening, we have a performance by Rupam Islam. We are also presenting a programme entitled ‘Shruti Shonglap Bibhongo'. It is an artistic collage by Abir Chatterjee, Surajit Banerjee, Srikanta Acharya, Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee and myself. The songs have been penned by Ujjwal Chattopadhyay," she added.
