The Sealdah court holds Sanjay Roy guilty of rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The term of the sentence will be pronounced on Monday (January 20, 2025).
Judge Anirban Das pronounced the verdict in the presence of the accused. The parents of the victim were also present in the court premises.
The Court said that it finds the accused guilty on the basis of the evidence put forward by the CBI for which the highest punishment will be death and the least will be life imprisonment. The judge said the accused is being held guilty of Sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of BNS.
The Additional District and Sessions Court, Sealdah held day-to-day trial after a charge sheet was filed in the case on October 7, 2024. The Central Bureau of Investigation charged Sanjay Roy, a civic police volunteer, with the gruesome crime.
The body of a 31-year-old doctor was recovered from the seminar hall of the State-run facility on August 7, 2024, triggering outrage across the country and prolonged protests by doctors in West Bengal.
