  • KOLKATA: The Sealdah Civil and Criminal court on Saturday convicted Sanjay Roy for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The verdict was delivered by Justice Anirban Das, who stated that the punishment would be announced on Monday at 12.30pm.

During the hearing, the accused, Sanjay Roy, pleaded his innocence, claiming he had been wrongfully implicated. He said, “I have not done this. Those who have done this are being let go. I have been falsely implicated.”

According to news agency ANI, he further argued, “I always wear a chain of rudraksh on my neck. If I committed the crime, my chain would have been broken at the place of occurrence. I can’t commit this crime.”

Justice Das, however, ordered his judicial custody, stating that the accused would have an opportunity to be heard again on Monday before the punishment is declared.

The case revolves around the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor, whose body was discovered on August 9 in the seminar room of the hospital.

The incident had triggered widespread protests, with demands for swift justice.

Earlier in the day, the victim’s father expressed confidence in the court’s decision, saying, “Whatever punishment is appropriate will be decided by the court.”

He added, “Not just one, but the DNA report shows the presence of four boys and one girl. We will feel some relief when the accused are punished. Until we get justice, we will keep knocking on the doors of the court and will also seek the support of the people of the country.”

The father also criticised the role of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case, alleging that the agency had failed to deliver.

“The CBI has done nothing in this matter. There is no question of satisfaction here. We have raised several questions before the High Court and the Supreme Court. We have sought answers from the court itself. We did not seek answers from the CBI, but the court assigned all responsibility to the CBI,” he said.
