12 Kolkata: Internal bickering came to the fore during Mohun Bagan club's annual general meeting on Saturday, with rival factions engaged in pushing and shoving as well as throwing chairs at each other.
The term of the club's current dispensation is set to end on March 18.
According to sources, when former secretary Srinjay Bose's camp raised the call for an early elections in March, it was met with dissent and shouting from members from the present administration. The uproar soon spilled over outside and people with allegiance to two factions were engaged in altercation during which chairs were also thrown at each other. The club secretary Debashis Dutta and vice-president Kunal Ghosh, who was chairing the meeting, later brought the situation under control before it threatened to spiral out of control.
"We'll another meeting in Feb and those who are pressing for elections will also be invited to attend it," Dutta later said.
Mohun Bagan also felicitated the Santosh Trophy-winning Bengal team on Saturday.
Former players Syed Naeemuddin, Pradip Choudhury and Prasun Banerjee — all Mohun Bagan Ratna awardees — were present on the occasion.
The club also felicitated former Santosh Trophy stalwarts like Shabbir Ali (Bengal Coach, 2009-11), Mridul Banerjee (Bengal Coach, 2016-17), Snehasish Chakraborty (Bengal Captain, 2009-10), Anupam Sarkar (Bengal Captain, 2010-11) and Rana Gharami (Bengal Captain, 2016-17).
A total of ₹5.5 lakh in prize money was distributed among the players, coaches, and support staff members in recognition of their exceptional achievement in the Santosh Trophy, the club said in a statement.
