  • Kolkata: Senior Kolkata Police officers and its legal team said they felt "vindicated" that their arrest in the rape and murder of the RG Kar PGT doctor had been upheld in court.

Once the Sealdah court declared arrested civic volunteer Sanjay Roy guilty on Saturday, several officers put up ‘Satyameva Jayate' in their profiles of their online accounts.

Some from the force even pleaded on the social media to "stop a witch hunt against them" and to accept that "police had made an honest effort". "We knew the evidence against Roy was strong and that justice shall always prevail in the end," a cop posted online.

But the top brass are keeping their fingers crossed, hoping the severest punishment is handed to Roy.

Some also tried to find out if the role of Kolkata Police, who had carried out the initial probe, was mentioned in the judgment. "The Kolkata Police worked with utmost dedication and alacrity to apprehend the accused within 24 hours of the incident after extensive scrutiny of the CCTV footage of the crime scene, seizures made and the statements recorded," said Sanjay Basu, the state's senior standing counsel in the Supreme Court, who had argued in the state for KP.

Asked if former Tala police station officer in charge Abhijit Mandal had requested to revoke his suspension, police remained non-committal. "Let it be his decision," said a colleague who had met Mondal after his release.
