  • 12 Kolkata: A homemaker in her early 40s, Suparna Bhattacharya, put up a brave fight against two bike-borne miscreants and thwarted a robbery attempt on Saturday morning at Bonorini Housing Complex in the Bonhooghly area of Baranagar. The accused had stormed into the housing complex and attempted to snatch her gold chain and earrings.

The attackers managed to flee the scene after the failed robbery attempt. The incident caused widespread concern among residents about the security measures in the neighbourhood.

According to local sources, the incident took place around 11:30am as Bhattacharya returned home from a nearby market. Saibal Roy, a neighbour, described the area as densely populated, making the daylight attack even more alarming.

"While entering the complex, two miscreants approached her from behind on a motorbike. One of them tried to snatch her gold chain, while the other attempted to grab her earrings. Suparna resisted, grabbing one of the attackers by the collar and shouting for help,"said Sarmistha Mukherjee, another resident.

In response, the attackers pushed Bhattacharya to the ground, causing injuries to her legs, knees, and hands.

Speaking about the ordeal, Bhattacharya said the attackers pushed her to the ground before escaping. She expressed shock over the incident happening in broad daylight and expressed fear about the lack of safety in the area. Meanwhile, investigation into the matter is underway. The victim's family filed a complaint at the Baranagar police station. A senior officer from the Barrackpore Commissionerate confirmed that the police visited the crime scene, spoke to the victim, and questioned the complex's security guards. Neighbouring police stations have been alerted to assist in tracking down the culprits.

Residents of the Bonorini Housing Complex have called for stricter security measures to ensure their safety, especially for women. Meanwhile, the police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
