  • KOLKATA: Ahead of the sentencing in the RG Kar rape-murder case at the Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court, the victim's father demanded the maximum punishment for the convicted Sanjay Roy. He also voiced his belief that other accomplices were involved in the crime.

"...He (accused Sanjay Roy) tried to speak on Saturday, the court asked him to speak on Monday. We don't know what he will say. He is a criminal, there are other people involved with him...he should get the harshest punishment," the victim's father said.

The deceased doctor's mother expressed her determination, stating that they would not permit the investigation to be "suppressed".

"We will not allow the investigation to be suppressed, we will take away the justice. My daughter will get justice for the people of the state, the people of the world, the people of the country and all those who are protesting. We have put our question in the High Court and we will get that answer from the Court. We have faith in the judge," she said.

A substantial police presence was positioned outside the court and surrounding areas today in preparation for the verdict announcement.

Security measures were intensified with two Kolkata Police deputy commissioners leading the operation, supported by five assistant commissioners, 14 inspectors, 31 sub-inspectors, 39 assistant sub-inspectors, 299 constables and 80 female police officers.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Samik Bhattacharya expressed concerns on Monday morning about the swift proceedings in the RG Kar rape and murder case. He insisted that investigations should proceed further and additional perpetrators should face capital punishment.

He emphasised that the court ought to consider Sanjay Roy's testimony and intended disclosures. The BJP leader noted that the public harbours uncertainties regarding the destruction of evidence in this case.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) West Bengal State Secretary Md Salim contended that multiple individuals were involved in the incident, and criticised the CBI for its lack of progress in the investigation. He also pointed out that central agencies were simply echoing Mamata Banerjee's statements.

Md Salim emphasised that this would be a prolonged struggle, and the public would persist until the victim's parents receive justice.

At Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court, Sanjay Roy was declared guilty in connection with the RG Kar rape and murder case involving a trainee doctor. The court specified that the accused faces charges under sections 64, 66, and 103/1 of BNS.

"There is a complaint against the accused that he went to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and went to the seminar room, assaulted and murdered the lady doctor taking rest there," the court said.

The incident, involving sexual assault and killing of a medical trainee whose remains were discovered in the hospital's conference room on August 9, triggered extensive demonstrations. Following the occurrence, authorities apprehended Sanjay Roy, who worked as a civic volunteer at the medical facility, for his alleged involvement in the offence.
