  • 12 Malda: CM Mamata Banerjee met slain Trinamool neta Dulal (Babla) Sarkar's widow at their Malda residence on Monday and assured her that "the brain behind this murder, however a big shot he might be, will be caught and punished".

"Babla was very close to me. He was our old worker and used to meet me whenever I came to Malda. Take it from me, nobody will be spared. I spoke with the DG regarding this case and got some information," she told Dulal's wife Chaitali.

"Babla was very popular for his work.Donald Trump InaugurationTrump’s first day agenda: 200 executive actions, border emergency, and sweeping pardonsMusk’s DOGE set to be sued within minutes of Trump’s inaugurationBiden pardons Fauci, Milley and Capitol attack committee membersChaitali will carry forward his unfinished works," the CM said.

After getting down at the helipad, Banerjee went straight to Chaitali's house, with Malda police super Pradeep Yadav accompanying her. She spoke for more than 40 minutes with Chaitali, who is also a councillor of English Bazaar municipality, where Dulal was a serving councillor.

On Sunday, police detained one Md Asrar from Bihar's Purnia district. Asrar was allegedly part of the four-member hit team that shot Dulal dead on Jan 2. Police had earlier arrested seven persons, including former chairman and TMC functionary Narendranath Tiwari. Two of the accused are still absconding.

Chaitali, after meeting the CM, said: "She (Mamata) is more a Didi to us than a chief minister. Today, she came to share my pain and express her love for Babla. I am grateful to her. I feel so relieved." Regarding the outcome of the case, she said: "I've faith in the police and their investigation."

Banerjee also hinted at some undercurrents going on in Malda district. "It is a mystery that we (TMC) cannot win parliament seats here or the assembly seat at English Bazaar, but in the municipality election our candidates win easily. Various equations are going on," she said.
