12 Kolkata: Neighbours of the RG Kar rape-murder victim, a 31-year-old second-year PGT doctor from Sodepur, expressed profound disappointment on Monday following the sentencing of Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment. Outraged by the verdict and critical of the CBI's investigation, they announced the cancellation of all amusement programmes, celebrations, and events until the convict is sentenced to death by the apex court.
"We were utterly shocked when the judgment handed him life imprisonment instead of death," said Soumen Chakraborty, a neighbour.
A local woman said, "This judgment felt like my childhood friend's death for the second time. We participated in every movement demanding justice for her but now it feels like all our efforts have been in vain."
The neighbours also accused CBI of inefficiency. "The investigation progressed so slowly that we feared the real culprits might escape justice, with Roy alone being held accountable. That fear has now come true. And he didn't even awarded the harshest punishment," said Pratima Bose, another neighbour.
The residents of the victim's Sodepur neighbourhood vowed to continue their fight for justice. "We have decided not to hold any celebration or events in our locality until proper justice is served. We won't stop until Roy is sentenced to death by the apex court," Abhijit Roy, a local, told TOI.
