Kolkata: The CBI will decide on the next course of action after it reviews the Sessions Court judgment, agency sources said on Tuesday. While the CBI prayed for the death penalty for Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the RG Kar rape and murder, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment.
"The maximum punishment is at the court's discretion. However, we are reviewing the judgment, and the next course of action will be decided soon," said a CBI official on Tuesday. CBI sources said they were investigating the larger conspiracy, and the supplementary charge sheet will be filed soon.
Earlier last month, RG Kar former principal Sandip Ghosh and ex-Tala PS officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal were granted bail after the CBI failed to submit the charge sheet against the duo on the 90th day of their custody. They were first produced in court on Sept 15 following their arrest in connection with the RG Kar rape and murder.
While Mondal is out on bail, Ghosh remained in custody as he was arrested in another case of financial irregularities. The CBI on Monday prayed for further custody of arrested persons in connection to the financial irregularities at the hospital. "The judge allowed them judicial custody and fixed the next date of hearing on Jan 30," said Indrajit Adhikari, lawyer of Biplab Singha — one of the vendors close to RG Kar former principal Sandip Ghosh.
"The CBI has not been able to gather a single piece of evidence against my client. The charge sheet is completely speculative and based on wild surmises and conjectures," said Zohaib Rauf, lawyer of Ghosh.
