  • 12 Kolkata: After political parties spoke out against the RG Kar conviction, a rally was held in central Kolkata against it on Tuesday.

SUCI's rally, which started from Hedua and went to Esplanade through College Street and SN Banerjee Road, clogged traffic in central Kolkata. Tarun Naskar, ex-MLA and SUCI's state secretariat member, felt that the rally to demand justice for the RG Kar victim was hugely successful.

"People of all classes participated and this emboldened our movement. The nexus between Centre and state is leading to delay in getting justice, but with SUCI agitating since Aug, we are sure that justice will be delivered," Naskar said.

He added that after the board examinations ended in March, they would hold protests in the districts too.

On Monday, from calling it a "travesty of justice" to blaming CBI for sloppy investigation and not being able to secure death penalty, political voices — be it from the governing party or the opposition — resonated in unison voicing their resentment at Sanjay Roy being sentenced to life imprisonment.

Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh stressed that party chief and CM Mamata Banerjee had already said that she was not happy with the judgment. "For these rapists and murderous fiends, death penalty is the appropriate punishment. Recently, state police have secured convictions in such cases in Farakka, Joynagar and Gurap. If RG Kar case was under Kolkata Police, they would have also secured a death penalty here," he wrote on X.

Leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari said while he didn't want to comment on the judgment, he felt "persons like Sanjay should be thrown before hungry wolves."
