  • Midnapore: Junior doctors at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) announced the withdrawal of their cease-work on Tuesday night. They said their move was prompted by assurances from the state authorities that they would look into their appeal for withdrawal of the suspension of seven junior doctors. Junior doctors wrote to CM Mamata Banerjee after health officials, while there have also been "back-channel talks" in favour of their appeal over the past two days.

"We have received assurances that our appeal for revoking the suspension of seven junior doctors will be considered. So we are ending our agitation," said a junior doctor. Those off duty did join the sit-in on Tuesday evening as planned, but later, decided to return to work. Earlier, state level grievance redress committee and IMA Bengal teams had visited the junior doctors.

MMCH has been witnessing protests ever since the suspension of seven junior doctors, who were on duty during the childbirth of five women, one of whom died and four others turned critical. The govt suspended six senior doctors, too.

Junior doctors had cited the postmortem report of the deceased mother, which had said septic shock was the cause and did not attribute it to post-surgery complication. They also pointed at blacklisted Ringer's lactate.
