Jalpaiguri: A 22-year-old tribal woman was allegedly raped and killed at Dalsinghpara tea estate in Alipurduar's Kalchini on Tuesday. The victim had gone missing on Tuesday afternoon, and was found dead under tea bushes in the garden late in the day.
Even as a suspect, Bablu Teli, was arrested, locals claimed that there were others involved in the crime. On Wednesday, local residents staged a blockade on Asian Highway 48, which connects Bhutan's Pasakha with Bangladesh at Changrabandha in Cooch Behar, demanding a thorough probe and arrest of other alleged culprits.
The blockade was lifted in the afternoon only after police and Jaigaon Development Authority chairman Ganga Prasad Sharma intervened and assured a free and fair investigation.
Alipurduar SP Y Raghuvamshi said: "The family of the girl lodged an FIR with Jaigaon police station against Teli and his family. Acting on this, we arrested Teli and detained two others. The body was sent for postmortem at Alipurduar district hospital and we are waiting for the autopsy report."
