Kolkata: Office-goers returning home had a trying time on Thursday as a 59-year-old woman from Vidyasagar Colony jumped in front of a Dakshineswar-bound train entering Kavi Nazrul station of the North-South corridor around 4.30pm. Services were disrupted for nearly an hour.
The suicide attempt disrupted services for around 50 minutes wth truncated services being run between Tollygunge and Dakshineswar. Normal services resumed around 5.20pm.
"As the woman jumped, the driver applied the emergency brakes. We had to cut off power supply to rescue the woman," a Metro spokesperson said. The woman is undergoing treatment at Peerless Hospital. "It was a lucky escape. She was saved from coming under the wheels of the train," an official said. "There was no Tollygunge-New Garia service from 4.30 pm to 5.20 pm. Truncated runs took place between Tollygunge and Dakshineswar."
Passengers were evacuated before the train was reversed into the tunnel. Tandra Bose, a private firm employee, waited at Tollygunge station for 20 minutes before the service suspension was announced. "Most cabs refused or demanded a high fare," she said. She finally decided to take a bus.
