  • Kolkata: Two South 24 Parganas residents, Yunus Khan and Milan Kirtaniya, were arrested late on Wednesday for breaking into at least dozen houses in Behala and Haridevpur in the past one month.

They would masquerade as vegetable sellers or clothes vendors and gather information of the house owners' schedules. "They would cover their faces with dark pieces of cloth to avoid detection on CCTV cameras. The two looted items from 12 houses in east Behala, Barisha and Haridevpur. They were arrested from Boral," said DC (SWD-Behala) Rahul De.

It was a theft on Jan 18 that led to their arrest. During the break-in at East Park, Behala, a CCTV camera captured a partial image of one of them as they entered an empty house at Sudhendubikash Bag. Police used this image of the face to create a sketch. Even as thefts were reported from three more houses thereafter, police circulated the sketch and received a tip-off. Haridevpur PS cops raided the location and arrested Khan and Kirtaniya, who were sent to police custody till Jan 30.
