Kolkata: The Ballygunge Police arrested three Kolkata residents after raids across Jammu, Gorakhpur in UP, and the city's outskirts for allegedly trapping a 45-year-old Manipur-based businessman. The accused, Md Nafis Akhtar, Samir Sarkar and Pintu Mondal, extorted Rs 35 lakh from the victim in the name of customs and Kolkata Police.
According to police, the victim was offered gold by the accused at a much lower price than the market. "The three set up a trap and said that the moment cash is handed over to them, the gold will be delivered to the businessman's employees in Manipur. Accordingly, the victim gathered Rs 35 lakh and reached a hotel in Ballygunge. When he was settling in, a few men barged into his room on the eve of Jan 15 stating they were from customs and Kolkata Police and snatched the money from him," said an officer.
The victim lodged a complaint at Ballygunge police station on Jan 16 and cops, led by OC Bodhisattwa Pramanik, used CCTV footage to track the accused.
