Kolkata: A Bangladeshi national who illegally entered India seven years ago, Meher Sheikh, was arrested from Murshidabad on Friday. Sheikh was residing in the Raninagar police station area using fake passport and forged documents.
The case came to light following a complaint lodged at Bhawanipur police station on Sept 27, 2022. The matter was registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Passport Act, with Lalbazar taking charge of the investigation.
Probe revealed that he had married a local woman and fraudulently claimed his father-in-law as his biological father to secure a place on the voter list. Police conducted a raid at his in-laws' residence on Friday night, leading to his arrest.
The investigation also led to numerous arrests across North 24 Parganas, East Burdwan, Murshidabad, and Hooghly. Most notably, a former sub-inspector of Kolkata Police was also arrested in connection with the case, highlighting possible institutional involvement in the racket.
