  • Kolkata: NHAI officers, central forces and cops from Dum Dum and Belgharia police stations thwarted an attempt to fill a state fisheries department wetland, spread over 4.46 acres (nearly seven bighas), adjacent to Belgharia Expressway. The administration on Saturday initiated efforts to restore it.

Cops had earlier arrested six persons in the case.

An NHAI officer said while building a service road along Belgharia Expressway, they found three-four cottahs of the wetland being filled up. "Locals were encouraged to dump waste there. After we filed an FIR at the Belgharia PS, promoters got gangs to dump earth there," a senior NHAI officer said.

"Two months ago, six men were arrested for illegally filling the wetland. Efforts are on to restore the wetland," Anupam Singh, DCP, South, Barrackpore Commissionerate, told TOI. —Sanjib Chakraborty
