Kolkata: For the third day in a row, multiple flights were held up, both in the sky and on the ground, due to thick fog at Kolkata airport on Saturday morning. Met officials have forecast improved weather from Sunday, when a breeze is expected to drive away the fog patch over Kolkata that has persisted since Thursday.
On Monday morning, 53 flights were delayed due to poor visibility amid fog. Twenty-three flights arrived late and 30 take-offs were pushed back until the visibility improved. But no flight was diverted.
On Thursday, 60 flights were affected due to fog and led to the diversion of 12 flights. On Friday, seven flights were diverted and 23 experienced delayed departures and arrivals because of dense fog in two phases at the airport.
"The easterly wind has led to moisture incursion in the Bay of Bengal, creating conditions favourable for fog. The situation will improve on Sunday, when strong winds are expected," said airport Met office director G K Das.
