Kolkata: Trinamool Congress on Tuesday sought a written explanation from Ashoknagar MLA and North 24 Parganas zilla parishad sabhadhipati Narayan Goswami, who received a show-cause notice last week for controversial remarks made on stage during a cultural event. According to TMC sources, Goswami was given seven days to respond.
"In an apparent attempt to appease the party, the MLA quietly met agriculture minister and chairman of the assembly disciplinary committee, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, and apologised for his remarks, expressing a desire to correct his mistakes," said a senior TMC neta, who emphasised that a written response was still mandatory.
Sources said the minister only asked the MLA to submit his written statement, which would be forwarded to CM Mamata Banerjee.
Goswami did not comment on the matter, only saying: "I will respond within the stipulated time."
The controversy stems from a viral video showing the MLA at an Ashoknagar Utsav event, where he made inappropriate jokes and derogatory comments about young women in the audience.
On Jan 24, Goswami was summoned to Nabanna and given the show-cause notice by Chattopadhyay.
