  • 12 Ramnagar: A six-year-old boy — brutally assaulted by his mother and stepfather and abandoned in a bush after they thought he was dead — has managed to escape, resulting in the arrest of the couple, Mamoni Giri and Sukdeb Mondal, at Ramnagar in East Midnapore. The boy, who had broken bones because of the beating, was also branded with cigarette butts. The boy was then hit on the head with a heavy object and left in a bush on Monday night. Despite the assault, the child regained consciousness Tuesday morning and walked to a nearby house to seek help.

The child is now receiving medical care under the supervision of a local childcare home. The incident occurred in the Khairanda area of Uttar Haldia village, under Ramnagar police station.

Sources said that after the death of her former husband Kartik Giri five years ago, Mamoni shifted to Uttar Haldia village with her young child. She married Sukdeb about two and a half months ago. However, after joining the new household, Mamoni could no longer tolerate her child and started assaulting him.

The accused were presented in the Contai sub-divisional court on Wednesday.
