  • Kolkata: Cops from the Golf Green police station arrested two persons for allegedly misbehaving, harassing and threatening doctors on duty at the emergency ward of MR Bangur Hospital early on Wednesday. The argument occurred over how a patient, brought in glass shards pierced in his hand, should be treated.

Police are looking into the role of two others, too.

According to police and hospital authorities, around 2 am on Wednesday, three to four people brought in a drunk youth, who had broken glass shards of a bottle lodged in his hand. Even as doctors at the emergency dressed the wound and tried to assess its extent for further treatment, those accompanying the youth reportedly started questioning the doctors why they had not used anaesthesia during the procedure. "An argument ensued. The doctors tried to explain what was required and urged them to be patient. But the group pushed and shoved the doctors on duty," said a hospital official.

Cops from the MR Bangur police outpost intervened, but within minutes, a mob of around 25 reached the hospital and tried to create trouble. "By this time, more cops from the hospital police outpost, Golf Green police station and the SSD office arrived and stopped the mob from causing any major chaos. Otherwise, there would have been vandalism in the hospital," said a hospital administrator.

Confirming the incident, DC (SSD-Jadavpur) Bidisha Kalita said, "Those with the patient had an argument with the on-duty doctors about treatment. MR Bangur police outpost cops responded and brought the scene under control. Two persons were arrested from the spot. Later, a case was started at Golf Green PS." An officer said they were checking the CCTV footage to identify all the youths involved. "Those who instigated the trouble will be arrested," he said, adding doctors' statements were being recorded.
