  • Kolkata: The owner of a biryani outlet — D Bapi Biryani — was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly threatening his landlord at gunpoint after being asked to vacate the outlet's rented premises in Madhyamgram. The landlord, Biswajit Dutta, had asked the outlet owner, Anirban Das, to vacate the building as the rental period had expired. According to cops, Das allegedly brandished a gun and issued threats. He was remanded in two-days' police custody.

"Das, a member of Mohanpur gram panchayat, has been arrested on charges of assault and threatening with a firearm," an officer said.

"Das and his security guard assaulted me. When I tried to resist, he took a gun from his guard and threatened me," Dutta said.

Das's wife Shramana said, "During the argument, Dutta used abusive language, and my husband protested. But he did not use a firearm."

A few months ago, a group of miscreants fired at this biryani outlet, injuring two people. Since then, Das has been travelling with a security guard.

Mohanpur Panchayat pradhan (chief) Nirmal Kar said, "This is not a political issue. The dispute could be due to business or personal reasons."
