  • 12 Kolkata: The loot of Rs 7.3 lakh from a production house at Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road near Park Street on Tuesday evening was an insider's job, claimed cops. Two persons were arrested and Rs 1.3 lakh was recovered in barely 36 hours after the snatching took place.

The Park Street police said the main accused, Vinod Rao (39) of Park Lane, had access to the office and was close to both the owner, Harith Ratna (48), and the victim, Alok Kumar Badani (43), who was assaulted. "Rao knew that Rs 7 lakh in cash would exchange hands at that time as Badani needed money for mother's treatment. Though Rao was not present at the spot, he hired men to do the job. Rao also has a history in crime," said a senior cop.

DC (South) Priyobrata Roy said the arrest was made from the IO room of the Park Street PS after Rao was summoned.. After quizzing Rao, police traced down the other accused, Md Aftabuddin (22)of Harshi Street in Narkelbagan, who was nabbed from his home. Money was recovered from his house. Cops have decided to meet traders in the wake of loots at Quest Mall and Park Street.
