12 Siliguri: Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) president Bimal Gurung was granted anticipatory bail in the 2017 murder of sub-inspector Amitabha Mullick. A Calcutta High Court (Jalpaiguri circuit bench) division bench of justices Joymalya Bagchi and Gaurang Kanth issued the orders.
Gurung's counsel Janardhan Periwal said the bail plea had been made in Nov 2024. "...In the 2017 statehood agitation, there was an allegation that Gurung, along with his party members, was camping at Rangit Jungle. When the police officer went to raid the camp, allegations were raised that in firing, sub-inspector Amitabha Mullick was killed. An FIR was lodged against Gurung for murder in Oct 2017," said Periwal.
