West Bengal BJP president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Thursday visited the parents of the R G Kar hospital rape and murder victim and assured them that he would forward their grievances against the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to “appropriate authorities”.
The parents handed him a letter, detailing their grievances about the CBI’s investigation into the case.
While speaking with the mediapersons Majumdar pointed out that the parents are “unsatisfied” with the probe.
“I have told them to keep the fight on. They are not satisfied with the investigation of the state police and the CBI. Previously the parents alleged that they were under pressure to not meet us. We assured them that we are with them,” he said, adding, “They have particularly raised concerns about one CBI officer, alleging inadequate efforts in the probe.”
“The parents are under constant attack from TMC leaders who made demeaning statements as they raised questions against the state administration and continued their fight for justice,” Majumdar said.
Meanwhile, the victim doctor’s father said the family discussed with Majumdar on how to take forward their fight for justice. “Sukanta Majumdar gave us guidelines of how to go forward. I have given him a letter, which is addressed to the Director of CBI, where I have expressed my dissatisfaction with the CBI team’s investigation. He has assured me that the letter will reach the proper hands,” he said.
Later in the evening, the victim doctor’s family met with Governor C V Ananda Bose. After an hour long meeting the father told mediapersons, “I asked for justice for my daughter and also that the CBI should do their investigation properly. I have even informed the Governor that I would like to meet the President of India, Prime Minister and Home Minister in this regard. He has said we have his complete support.”
The post-graduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024, triggering nationwide outrage. The investigation into the case was handed to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court. A civic volunteer, named Sanjay Roy, was convicted by a court in the rape and murder case, and sentenced to life imprisonment till death.
However, the parents of the doctor claimed that the investigation was done half-heartedly and several other culprits involved in the crime were shielded.
They had also demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stating that being the CM, she cannot disown the responsibility for the “attempts of the police and hospital authorities to destroy evidence of the rape and murder of our daughter”. — WITH PTI
