"I have been working in this area for several years but never saw a crime like this here at a time when so many people were out on the road. It is frightening," said a worker of a tea joint, located at a stone's throw from the spot of crime. According to cops, the victim had gone to the tea joint with the minor's father before she was attacked on Thursday night. The incident location borders a residential area on Canal West Road, featuring a private nursing home and medical clinic.
Local resident Ila Dutta, aged 70-plus, shared her concerns: "We heard a chaos on the road last night. Of late, noise on the road continues till 2am as the eatery, bakery and tea joint stay open till late night. We heard some people were screaming but we did not pay much heed to it. This morning, my son went out and came to know about the incident. I got horrified as I learnt a murder took place near my house. As a senior citizen I feel that my security is at stake."
Kasba resident Anirban Seal arrived after the incident. "As I came here, I found people were crowding on the road and a woman was blood splattered. Shocked, I left this place in a jiffy. I am a regular at this place and today I found the place less crowded," he said.
Friday night visitors expressed their unease about the previous day's events.
Byepass Dhaba reported reduced customer numbers, according to staff member Akash Dutta. "Many people were having dinner with families when the incident happened. As it became public, many customers stayed away today," he noted. Takeaway counter staff Sandeep Khatua said: "I am from Sundarbans. I was manning the counter at night when the incident happened. I still cannot believe that a minor could commit such crime."
