His 34-year-old mother and 22-year-old cousin were arrested on Friday morning. Police are searching for the boy's father and a driver of the car in which the accused reached Metropolitan. Cops have detained a fourth person, whose identity has not been disclosed.

"The minor was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board on Friday and was sent to an observation home. The two others have been remanded in police custody till Feb 11," said DC (east) Arish Bilal.

According to police, the minor was home when his mother and father had a heated argument shortly after noon. It was over the father's refusal to end his friendship with Rafiya. Even when his mother threatened to end her life, his father appeared unconcerned. Later in the evening, when the father left the home, the mother-son duo decided to follow him.

"As per the statement of the juvenile, his father and the victim were travelling in an SUV. Four persons — the son, his mother, a cousin and the driver followed in another SUV. The minor took help of the GPS tracker in his father's car to zero in on him. When they reached Metropolitan and spotted the father's car, they alighted. They then saw him and Rafiya in a tea shop and were heading to confront them when the father spotted them and fled. So did the driver. The attack happened thereafter," said DC Bilal.

Joint CP (crime & traffic) Rupesh Kumar said "Prima facie, it seems like an unplanned act of revenge."

"The victim and the boy's father were having tea. After the father fled, the boy took out a knife and repeatedly struck at Rafiya. As she tried to resist, she received stab wounds on her hands. The rest of the stabs landed on her neck. As she tried to flee, the minor's cousin held her from behind, forcing her to her knees. The minor's mother too attacked the victim," said an officer. The attackers were later overpowered by locals and handed over to cops.

Profusely bleeding, Rafiya managed to reach a nearby medicine store where she sought help. A woman present at the spot rushed her in a cab to the NRS Hospital. Though she was being treated, Rafiya died around 2 am. Pragati Maidan Police registered a murder case on the complaint of one Tanisha Kar, a resident of Seal Lane.
