• Repair-deck plan for Maa breakdown snarls
    Times of India | 1 February 2025
  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has agreed to the construction of extended decks at four points on the Maa Flyover, where vehicles, getting stalled on the elevated corridor, can be parked. The Kolkata Traffic Police has been persistently demanding these decks, citing the need to quickly clear the flyover carriageway whenever there is a breakdown, particularly during rush hours when 150 vehicles use Maa flyover every minute.

The KMDA has also agreed to create an extra cut-out in the middle of the AJC Bose Road Flyover to address vehicle breakdowns. These decks and the cut-out will be used to place broken-down vehicles during peak hours so that normal traffic is not hampered.

All the decks are proposed at the eastern end of the flyover due to the availability of space there and also because this stretch witnesses maximum congestion. The spots were finalised after an inspection by KMDA officials and Kolkata Traffic Police officers on Jan 28 and an elaborate discussion at the district committee meeting on Wednesday. The detailed project report (DPR) will now be prepared.

Maa Flyover, combined with AJC Bose Road Flyover, is one of the longest elevated corridors in the city, and definitely the busiest. Vehicle breakdowns on it are common and lead to congestions.

Police believe the decks can be used to tow and park vehicles that encounter a breakdown so that the carriageway is quickly cleared for traffic. Police have also kept tow trucks parked between the two flanks at multiple points on the flyover, ready to haul away vehicles, if required. Also, breakdown helpline contact is marked all along the flyover for motorists to alert cops.
