  • The number of those from West Bengal who were killed in the Maha Kumbh stampede in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj has now increased to six, official sources said on Friday.

After the families of some of the deceased from West Bengal alleged that they are yet to get death certificates, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday asked Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to reach out to the Uttar Pradesh government on the matter.

Sources in the state administration said that Pant spoke to the officials concerned in the Uttar Pradesh administration and also directed the resident commissioner of Bengal, posted in New Delhi, to reach out to the Uttar Pradesh government.

At least eight more people hailing from West Bengal are still missing.

Officials identified the six who died as Basanti Poddar (65), a resident of Golf Green, Kolkata, Amal Poddar (54), a resident of Siliguri of Malda district, Amiya Saha (33), Urmila Bhuiyan, 75, of Paschim Medinipur, Mithun Sharma (32) of Cooch Behar and Binod Ruidas, a Paschim Bardhaman resident.

The family members of Basanti Poddar and Binod Ruidas alleged that even as the mortal remains were received, the death certificates are yet to be sent.

State Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Aroop Biswas, who visited Basanti Poddar’s residence on Thursday, said, “This shows the insensitive attitude of the Uttar Pradesh government towards pilgrims. It is also creating many legal complications. But our Chief Minister will find some solution.”

For the relatives of missing persons, it has been an agonising wait.

Putul Roy, a resident of Siliguri, reached Sector 22 of the Mela area after the tragedy and informed her family members. However, there has been no word from her simce and her phone is switched off, her family members said.

“I have informed the police station also and shared picture of my mother on social media,” said her son Jayant Roy.
