Subir Naskar (52), who went to the fair with a 28-member teamfrom Kudghat and had been missing, was back home with a horrible experience. "I lost my phone and had only Rs 120 when I reached Varanasi station. Someone lent me Rs 200 to buy a ticket for a Howrah-bound train. I had my first meal since the stampedeon returning home," he said.
Two women from Siliguri — Putul Roy of Samar Nagar and Darshana Devi Bansal of Panjabi Para — who went missing during the stampede, reunited with their families on Saturday. "The stampede happened when a Maharaja's vehicle blocked the way," Roy recounted. Bansal said she was saved because she fell in a pit and stayed there till the crowd thinned.
TMC Ghatal block president Dilip Majhi and his wife, who were also injured in the stampede, returned on Friday night. "We held on to each other, trying to walk on amid bodies lying scattered," Majhi said.
