Lalbazar said the minor was instrumental in tracking his father's car using the GPS in that vehicle. While the boy, his mother and the cousin travelled in a separate SUV, it was he who kept instructing their driver. Also, he was the one who stabbed the victim, police said. "All these indicate there might have been a method to the madness. The victim's injuries are crucial to establish this thought. The repeated stabbing to ensure death is significant," said an officer.

Police have started questioning family members of the accused, trying to trace the minor's father, a trader by profession, as well as the driver of the SUV, by which the accused had reached the spot. Police may visit Giridih in search of the trader.

The Juvenile Justice Board in Kolkata had recently ruled that a girl, who was 17 years old in 2018, when she had trafficked a 15-year-old girl, should be treated as an adult in court.

Following the Nirbhaya case, legislation brought in by the Centre says if a child above 15 years is involved in a heinous crime, like rape or murder, he or she can be tried as an adult at the special children's court and can be punished with up to 10 years in jail. Public prosecutor Sourin Ghosal said a minor above 15 years, accused of murder, can be tried as an adult under three circumstances: one, they should be physically strong enough to commit the murder; two, they should be mentally sound while committing the crime and three, they should understand the consequences of committing such a crime.

The KP homicide branch first applied this section while probing the murder of an octogenarian in New Alipore. Later, Lalbazar applied this section in several cases, including the murder of a Punjabi elderly woman, Urmila Jhunjhunwala, in Garcha. But to apply it, the court's permission is required to present the arrested minor before a medical board. The board will assess the mental and physical maturity of the accused, the severity of the crime and the accused's understanding of the crime's consequences. Only if they consider the accused as an "adult" can this section be applied.
