• Bengal end on winning note
    Times of India | 2 February 2025
  • 123 Kolkata: In a fitting farewell to Wriddhiman Saha, Bengal thrashed Punjab by an innings and 13 runs in their final Ranji Trophy Elite Group ‘C' league match at the Eden Gardens here on Saturday.

Saha, who always put team laurels over individual feats, bid a goodbye to cricket on a winning note after playing for more than two decades. However, Bengal's seven points from this victory could not ensure them a spot in the knockouts as they could not finish among the top two of the group ending with 21 points.

Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal drew first blood in the fourth over of the day having Prabhsimran Singh caught by Sudip Chatterjee in the slips. In his very next over, it got first innings' centurion Anmol Malhotra caught behind.

Sumit Mohanta almost sealed the match by picking up overnight unbeaten batter Anmolpreet Singh and Aradhya Shukla in the very next over with wicketkeeper Abishek Porel taking both the catches.

It was only a matter of time from there as the lower-order batters managed to play some shots before getting out.

The Bengal team members carried Saha, who donned the wicketkeeper's gloves for the last few minutes of the match, off the field on their shoulders to bring the curtains down on an illustrious career.

Man-of-the-Match Jaiswal ended with another four-wicket haul while Mohanta claimed three for 29.

Brief scores: Punjab 191 & 139 in 35.4 ovs (Anmolpreet Singh 30, Mayank Markande 31). Bengal 343 in 92.4 ovs. Bengal won by an innings and 13 runs.
